They are essentially a two way radio like everyone is used to... but they then use a nationwide cellular network to transmit and receive, meaning there are no range restraints and no expensive infrastucture to install.
 
Your location team could be split between two sites in London and Glasgow.. but with these radios you can chat via radio like you were just 500 yards away.
